When is International Women’s Day celebrated ?

International women’s day is celebrated on 8thMarch of every year.

What’s the history of International Women’s Day?

International Women Day has occurred for well over a century with the first gathering held in 1911. The seeds were planted in 1908, when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote.

It was the Socialist Party of America who declared the first National Woman’s Day, in 1909.

Then in 1910, the idea to make the day international was tabled during a conference. It came from a woman called Clara Zetkin. There were 100 women there, from 17 countries, and they agreed on her suggestion unanimously.

It was first celebrated in 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. The centenary was celebrated in 2011, so this year we’re technically celebrating the 110th International Women’s Day.

The history of International Women Day dates back to the early 20th century. In 1908, women in New York City organized a march demanding better working conditions and the right to vote. The following year, the Socialist Party of America declared the first National Woman’s Day, which was celebrated on February 28th, 1909.

In 1910, Clara Zetkin, a German activist, proposed that an International Women’s Day be established to honor the achievements of women and advocate for women’s rights around the world. The proposal was approved at the International Conference of Working Women held in Copenhagen, Denmark, and the first International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 19th, 1911.

Initially, International Women Day was focused on women’s suffrage and labor rights. But over the years, it has evolved to become a day to celebrate women’s achievements and to advocate for gender equality in all aspects of life. Today, International Women Day is celebrated in many countries around the world and has become an important event in the fight for women’s rights and empowerment.
